Demand for repatriation of abductees
Korean delegate's proposal for resolution
At General Assembly of International Red Cross
P.1, Chosun Daily, Nov.3, 1957
¡¼New Delhi Nov.1 UP = Dongyang¡½
On November 1, the Korean delegation submitted a resolution to the General Assembly of the International Red Cross in New Delhi requesting the repatriation of South Korean civilians abducted by the North during the Korean War. The resolution is to be discussed in a meeting of the Committee of Humanitarian Law on the night of November 1. It is expected to serve as an opportunity for the International Red Cross (IRC) to call upon the North Korean Red Cross to conform to the principles of the Red Cross by fulfilling its humanitarian responsibility.
Furthermore, the resolution asks for the International Red Cross¡¯ full support in requesting that the North swiftly repatriate South Korean civilians whom it abducted during the Korean War. It also asks the International Red Cross to make further efforts to obtain information from the North Korean Red Cross on the abducted civilians' whereabouts. Stressing the justice of addressing the issue, the resolution states that it is only natural for the abductees' families to demand to know the abductees' whereabouts and wellbeing, and their swift return.
