<News about civilian abductees and their families>
The Korean Red Cross on November 18 announced the first list of some 100 survivors out of a list of 337 civilians abducted by North Korea during the Korean War. The families of the abductees who heard the announcement crowded around the Korean Red Cross to ask about abducted family members, causing a brief riot.
Wives clenching newspapers containing the list grabbed Korean Red Cross staff and asked what had happened with tears in their eyes. Meanwhile, young girls asked in tearful voices whether the names of the survivors on the list were correct. The family members of civilian abductees who rushed to the Korean Red Cross desperately seeking to learn their loved ones¡¯ fates were all brimming with tears.
People who did not register their abducted family members last year enquired if it was possible to learn the fates of unregistered civilian abductees. In response, the Korean Red Cross said that a 2nd list of survivors would soon be published and that the dead-and-missing roll would also be announced thanks to the efforts of the International Red Cross. The Korean Red Cross added that it will ask the International Red Cross for an intercession on behalf of the families of unregistered civilian abductees.
